maura: In honor of tomorrow night’s Pete & Pete retrospective shows at Bowery (tickets still available, I just checked!), indiepop guru Mike Appelstein counted down six of the show’s best musical moments. Michael Stipe, Luscious Jackson, and Fat Tulips ahoy!  “A Hard Day’s Pete” is the most poignant, meaningful, and true reflection on why we love music that’s ever...

I wasn’t 100% sure what circumcision was when I first saw this movie, so the first scene with Rabbi Tuckman talking about what being a mohel entails. Now that I’m an adult, I have the critical faculties to see that it’s just a cheap dick joke.

Don't worry
I still have to go back next week for the real root canal. But the good news is, I’ll be on antibiotics until then, so I don’t have to concern myself with drinking away my misery.

But I’m gonna do that thing that all the more popular people on this thing do, and ask you to ask me stuff! And then when I get back this afternoon, I can post all my grumpy, pissed-off, doped-up answers. It’ll be fun, I swear.

Found out at the party I hosted saturday
deepomega: that I’m known as the “short, funny guy” by some people I only see every now and then. I got a physical a few years ago, and the nurse measured me. I looked at the form later, and she had written “five feet, eight and three-quarters inches.” She couldn’t give me a quarter inch!

bobbybigwheel: There’s been a mini-outrage about a 101-year-old knish shop, Yonah Schimmel, potentially going out of business on the Lower East Side. However, people are ignoring exactly WHY this place is going out of business. “The store, where the knish was possibly invented, is… “But it’s a neighborhood, not a museum.”

Maybe not genuine enough for Lin, who concluded his bit abruptly: “That’s all I’m going to read,” he said, and introduced the next reader, Marie Calloway. Hey guys, I co-hosted a show on Sunday where eight bloggers told jokes on...

Some thoughts on this Pete and Pete article →
1) I only read Splitsider articles that are cross-posted on the Awl, so I probably don’t have a great basis for making judgments. (Although I assume stuff that’s cross-posted is deemed to be elite content, so maybe I have an excellent basis. Who knows.) Anyway, I’m always disappointed in how dry and bland these posts can be, and the Pete and Pete article is a textbook example....

The Top 100 Emo Songs of All Time
I have a lot of thoughts about the Boston Phoenix’s Top 100 Emo Songs of All Time! My main takeaway: they actually did a pretty good job! The list: I was generally satisfied with the fullness of the Phoenix’s plumbing of the canon, especially the respect they showed to later emo acts. When you’re talking about emo, there always seems to be a tinge of shame and a temptation to...
