cherrispryteaintsobrite: “It does help, to be a writer, to have the sort of crazed ego that doesn’t allow for failure. The best reaction to a rejection slip is a sort of wild-eyed madness, an evil grin, and sitting yourself in front of the keyboard muttering “Okay, you bastards. Try rejecting this!” and then writing something so unbelievably brilliant that all other writers will disembowel...

And that a lot of Americans, including President Obama, regard that as a good thing? … It is nevertheless true that institutions of higher education generally value reason more than faith; they value intellectual achievement more than moral achievement; they’re implicated in...

If I have any regrets about my "writing career"
It’s that when I was a little younger, I refrained from writing and pitching ideas, because I had this enduring fear that I didn’t have a blessed clue what I was talking about, and who cares what a 23-year-old has to say about anything? Nowadays, I realize not that I actually did have a clue about anything, but rather there’s always a platform for a fresh-out-of-college kid to...

What color is Blanka?
I UNDERSTAND that Blanka is green in all of the cover and promotional art for Street Fighter. But in the actual game, he was yellow! Tell me he wasn’t yellow!

maura: In honor of tomorrow night’s Pete & Pete retrospective shows at Bowery (tickets still available, I just checked!), indiepop guru Mike Appelstein counted down six of the show’s best musical moments. Michael Stipe, Luscious Jackson, and Fat Tulips ahoy!  “A Hard Day’s Pete” is the most poignant, meaningful, and true reflection on why we love music that’s ever...

I wasn’t 100% sure what circumcision was when I first saw this movie, so the first scene with Rabbi Tuckman talking about what being a mohel entails. Now that I’m an adult, I have the critical faculties to see that it’s just a cheap dick joke.

Don't worry
I still have to go back next week for the real root canal. But the good news is, I’ll be on antibiotics until then, so I don’t have to concern myself with drinking away my misery.

Found out at the party I hosted saturday
deepomega: that I’m known as the “short, funny guy” by some people I only see every now and then. I got a physical a few years ago, and the nurse measured me. I looked at the form later, and she had written “five feet, eight and three-quarters inches.” She couldn’t give me a quarter inch!

Maybe not genuine enough for Lin, who concluded his bit abruptly: “That’s all I’m going to read,” he said, and introduced the next reader, Marie Calloway. Some thoughts on this Pete and Pete article →
1) I only read Splitsider articles that are cross-posted on the Awl, so I probably don’t have a great basis for making judgments. (Although I assume stuff that’s cross-posted is deemed to be elite content, so maybe I have an excellent basis. Who knows.) Anyway, I’m always disappointed in how dry and bland these posts can be, and the Pete and Pete article is a textbook example....
